The Providence Journal’s Jim Donaldson wrote a piece discussing the research of Emory University’s Goizueta Business School Marketing Professors Mike Lewis and Manish Tripathi which ranked football fans relative to the extent of their emotional swings.
Not only does Donaldson explain the methodology and outcomes of the study, but he also brings the findings close to home, focusing on the study in relation to the Journal’s local team. As he puts it, “[Patriot’s fans] soar to higher ‘highs’ when their team wins and plummet to lower ‘lows’ after losses than fans of almost any other team in the league. And they are, relatively speaking, more depressed when the Patriots lose than they are happy when the Patriots win”
Quoted throughout the article, Tripathi says the motivation for their study was that: “Sports is big business. Sports is big money. We want to apply business analytics to evaluate teams and players.”
