Within the Emory University Global umbrella are a handful of prestigious awards, given to hardworking and inspiring alumni. The Sheth Distinguished International Alumni Award is one of them, funded by and named after Goizueta Business School’s very own Professor Jagdish Sheth.
The award was established to recognize the extraordinary contributions our international alumni have made in their country and, for that matter, all over world. Invariably they attribute their success to the exceptional education and personal mentorship they received at Emory University.

Established in 2002, this award seeks nominations of Emory University alumni who are – among other criteria – “highly distinguished” in their profession or home country and dedicated to work that’s providing “outstanding contributions to humanity, science, art, or human welfare.”
This year’s recipient is Faizat Badmus-Busari 20L, head of programs for the Strategic Initiative for Women in the Horn of Africa (SIHA) Network.
“Those at Emory Law who know Dr. Badmus-Busari, hold her in high regard and marvel at the incredible contributions she has made to women’s rights,” says nominator Jennifer Crabb Kyles, assistant vice president of the Emory Alumni Association.
In her role, Badmus-Busari oversees a diverse range of programs that hope to empower women and promote gender equality in the region. Her career has spanned positions at The Carter Center, UNICEF, and UN Women, where she was an integral component in forming policy, program strategies, and creating initiatives that focused on social inclusion, access to justice, democracy, and the prevention of violence against women and children.
“Being recognized by this award, particularly by Emory, is incredibly meaningful to me. It validates the hard work, dedication, setbacks, struggles, and passion that I’ve poured into my work, focusing on gender rights,” says Badmus-Busari.
This acknowledgment affirms the impact of my efforts and amplifies the message of equality and justice that I strive to propagate. It serves as a reminder that the challenges we face in advocating for gender rights are seen and valued, and it encourages me to push even further in my pursuits.

Previous award winners from Goizueta have included Woo Taek Kim 90MBA, Henry Haipeng Zhang (Feng Tang) 00MBA, and Lado Gurgenidze 93MBA, among others.
“Learning about the Sheth Distinguished International Alumni Award and its significance has been an enlightening and humbling experience,” shares Badmus-Busari.
After being nominated, Badmus-Busari dug into the history of Sheth and The Sheth Family Foundation.
“It’s inspiring to see how academic success and professional achievements can be channeled into meaningful philanthropic endeavors, and this has certainly broadened my perspective on the potential reach and impact of our work beyond our immediate fields.”
