A message from Jan Love, Interim Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs
It is with great excitement that I announce Emory’s search for the next John H. Harland Dean of Goizueta Business School (GBS). Dean Vikas Sukhatme of Emory School of Medicine will serve as the chair of the search committee, which began meeting on June 16, with the goal of having a new dean in place during the coming academic year.
Many thanks are due to Interim Dean Karen Sedatole, Goizueta Advisory Board Term Professor of Accounting, who has led GBS since May 30, 2020. While maintaining the high standards and rankings for which the school is known, Sedatole has also successfully led GBS through Emory’s COVID-19 response and recovery. Previously, GBS was led by Erika James, who left to assume the deanship of the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania.
Founded in 1919, GBS has prepared principled leaders to have a positive effect on business and society for more than 100 years. Positioned in Atlanta, a leading hub for tech and Fortune 500 companies, including The Coca-Cola Company and Delta, GBS is poised to offer students a range of innovative first-hand experiences in top companies and in the classroom.
Agile and innovative, GBS responds quickly to the needs of its students and community. This spring the classroom experience evolved to the next generation with the installation of classroom technologies to connect students studying in Atlanta and beyond with each other and faculty in new ways, extending GBS’s global reach and eliminating the limitations of geography.
Additionally, the Roberto C. Goizueta Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation launched in response to student interest in entrepreneurship and offers more than 15 different classes. The Roberto C. Goizueta Business and Society Institute, which looks to transform business and solve society’s challenges by addressing inequality and climate change, also opened as the newest phase of the school’s social impact initiative.
In spring 2021, GBS enrolled nearly 1,000 undergraduate students and more than 750 graduate students. The BBA program is ranked #12 by US News & World Report and the Executive MBA, Evening MBA, and full-time MBA are ranked #19, #13, and #26 respectively by US News & World Report.
Members of the Search Advisory Committee—including GBS students, faculty, and leadership—will request community input about what they see as the most important attributes for the new dean and will arrange listening sessions to hear from members of the Goizueta and Emory communities. Dates and locations will be made available soon. We hope that you will attend and be part of the process.
